Enjoying Traditional Performance at Korea House

korea house

This is the next story after having a great dinner at Korea House. We had the tickets for 20.30-21.30 show from KDIS. At the the entrance of the theater, we were greeted by two beautiful ladies wearing Hanbok, later on I realized that they were the performers of the show. MinJee, our KDIS host, told us that we’re going to watch 8 performances representing eight genres of music and dance.

After we found our seat, the lights were dimmed. The first show was entitled Reign of Peace and Prosperity. It was a very nice dance telling about the footsteps of the traditional Korean music and dance, performed for the peace and prosperity of Korea. I love to see the colorful traditional costumes: bright and distinctive!

The second show was Daegeum Sanjo and Dance. It’s Korean traditional dance featuring beautiful gesture of a woman dancer accompanied by Daegeum Sanjo solo performance. The melody and rhythm were so unique to my ears, but they’re so catchy. It started very slow rhythm and became faster, ending with a very fast rhythm and creating enthusiasm to the audience.

Next was Beauty of Incense. The dance was a visual representation of beautiful curved lines characterizing Korean culture. They were also static movements, and the running text above the stage showed “comparable to the emptiness filling a space”during the movements. And after that was Seoljanggo show. It’s a percussion show, with four men performing four Janggo (a drum shaped like an hour glass). The tradition came from farmers’ percussion activity during harvest time. And each janggo drummer plays a slightly different beat, and it was a dynamic rythm to me, but I’d rather hear Jakarta Percussion show, hahaa…not too strange to my ears.

The fifth show was Snow Flower Dance. The dance is originated from a winter scene with snow falling like flowers. The other name of the dance is Seolhwamu. I love watching beautiful dancers moving in grace and harmony. (My daughter also loves to replay the video I took with my cellphone over and over again..)

The Next show was Pansori and Dance. This dance is based on the famous love story between Chunhyang and Mongnyong, a loove between Courtesan’s daughter and Government official’s son. That is a work of Pansori inscribed in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. I love the lady singer voice: beautiful and powerful. She reminded me of Javanese dalang with a voice quality of a sinden, a traditional Javanese singer. What I don’t really like is the ending part when Mongyong pulled Chunhyang’s ribbon of her hanbook and started to kiss her as a sign for their first night make love, ewww…not a romantic scene to me since the movement should be slow and gentle, not like somebody’s going to rape a virgin hahaha..

The seventh show was Arirang Concerto, Gayageum’s rich style with arirang’s melody. Arirang has been registered as an UNESCO Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012. And yes I think it was such a beautiful piece of music. The performance seems like taking me somewhere peaceful in the world…so grandeur (you know when I returned to my hotel after the show, I downloaded Arirang song and started singing along …”Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo…Arirang gogaero neomeoganda.Nareul beorigo gashineun nimeunShimrido motgaseo balbyeongnanda”….what a feeling!) 🙂 🙂

OK now let me just finish up this writing with  the last performance : a dance troupe called Drum Dance with Pungmulnori. The performance was exciting drum dance nicely combined with the traditional Pungmul-nori consisting of Janggo (drum shaped like an hourglass), Buk (drum), Jing (large gong), and small gong (Kkwaenggwari). All I can say about this troupe: super entertaining, high energy and funny too. I like the comedy in the  show, especially the guy with the hairy hat, oh I love this act!

My impression that night was how Korean preserve their traditional culture so highly. And they were successful in blending the modern with the traditional so seamlessly. When I asked MinJee about the ticket for show, she mentioned 50,000.KRW per person. WOW! Thanks KDI School, another expensive treat! 😀

Ronggowarsito

ronggowarsito

Raden Ngabehi Rangga Warsita  was a Javanese poet. He was born into a famous literary family in Surakarta, in Central Java, the Yasadipura family. People regarded him as the last Javanese poet. His real name is Bagus Burhan. He was a bad boy when he was kid, then his parents sent him to islamic school in Ponorogo. After completing study in Ponorogo, he became a very religious person. Ronggowarsito is famous for many of his literary works in Javanese language, such as

When I was in elementary school, I used to sing Javanese traditional song whose lyrics derived from Ronggowarsito’s literary work. And my teacher, Ki Koesno, would translate the meaning of the song elaborately. Here’s one of Ronggowarsito song:

amenangi zaman édan,éwuhaya ing pambudi,mélu ngédan nora tahan,yén tan mélu anglakoni, boya keduman mélik, kaliren wekasanipun, ndilalah kersa Allah,begja-begjaning kang lali, luwih begja kang éling klawan waspada.

The song is about bootlickers in this crazy world. People have to be sycophant in order to survive in this life. But the song ended with the advice that only those believers will be the winner in life.

Saya mau share juga teks Ronngowarsito yang baru saja saya dapat dari teman saya:

Rejeki iku ora iså ditiru..
REJEKI ITU TIDAK BISA DITIRU..

Senajan pådå lakumu
WALAU SAMA JALANMU

Senajan pådå dodolan mu,
WALAU SAMA JUALANMU

Senajan pådå nyambut gawemu.
WALAU SAMA PEKERJAANMU…

Kasil sing ditåmpå bakal bedå2….,
HASIL YANG DITERIMA AKAN BERBEDA SATU SAMA LAIN

Iså bedå nèng akèhé båndhå,
BISA LAIN DALAM BANYAKNYA HARTA

Iså ugå ånå nèng Råså lan Ayemé ati, Yåaa iku sing jenengé bahagia….
BISA LAIN DALAM RASA BAHAGIA DAN KETENTERAMAN HATI

Kabèh iku såkå tresnané Gusti kang måhå kuwåså…..,
SEMUA ITU ATAS KASIH DARI TUHAN YANG MAHA KUASA

Såpå temen bakal tinemu,
BARANG SIAPA BER-SUNGGUH2 AKAN MENEMUKAN

Såpå wani rekåså bakal nggayuh mulyå.
BARANG SIAPA BERANI BERSUSAH PAYAH AKAN MENEMUKAN KEMULIAAN

Dudu akèhé, nanging berkahé kang dadèkaké cukup lan nyukupi…..
BUKAN BANYAKNYA MELAINKAN BERKAH-NYA YANG MENJADIKAN CUKUP DAN MENCUKUPI

Wis ginaris nèng takdiré menungså yèn åpå sing urip kuwi wis disangoni såkå sing kuwåså.
SUDAH DIGARISKAN OLEH TAKDIR BAHWA SEMUA YANG HIDUP ITU SUDAH DIBERI BEKAL OLEH YANG MAHA KUASA

Dalan urip lan pangané wis cemepak cedhak kåyå angin sing disedhot bendinané….,
JALAN HIDUP DAN REJEKI SUDAH TERSEDIA.. DEKAT.. SEPERTI UDARA YANG KITA HIRUP SETIAP HARINYA

Nanging kadhang menungså sulap måtå lan peteng atiné, sing adoh såkå awaké katon padhang cemlorot ngawé-awé,
Nanging sing cedhak nèng ngarepé lan dadi tanggung jawabé disiå-siå kåyå orå duwé gunå
TETAPI KADANG MANUSIA SILAU MATA DAN GELAP HATI, YANG JAUH KELIHATAN BERKILAU DAN MENARIK HATI.. TETAPI YANG DEKAT DIDEPANNYA DAN MENJADI TANGGUNG JAWABNYA DISIA-SIAKAN SEPERTI TAK ADA GUNA

Rejeki iku wis cemepak såkå Gusti, ora bakal kurang anané kanggo nyukupi butuhé menungså såkå lair tekané pati….,
REJEKI ITU SUDAH DISEDIAKAN OLEH TUHAN, TIDAK BAKAL BERKURANG UNTUK MENCUKUPI KEBUTUHAN MANUSIA
DARI LAHIR SAMPAI MATI

Nanging yèn kanggo nuruti karep menungså sing ora ånå watesé, rasané kabèh cupet, nèng pikiran ruwet, lan atiné marahi bundhet.
TETAPI KALAU MENURUTI KEMAUAN MANUSIA YANG TIDAK ADA BATASNYA, SEMUA DIRASA KURANG MEMBUAT RUWET DI HATI DAN PIKIRAN

Welingé wong tuwå, åpå sing ånå dilakoni lan åpå sing durung ånå åjå diarep-arep, semèlèhké atimu, yèn wis dadi duwèkmu bakal tinemu, yèn ora jatahmu, åpå maneh kok ngrebut såkå wong liyå nganggo cårå sing ålå, yå waé, iku bakal gawé uripmu lårå, rekåså lan angkårå murkå sak jeroning kaluwargå, kabeh iku bakal sirnå balik dadi sakmestiné.
PETUAH ORANG TUA, JALANILAH APA YANG ADA DIDEPAN MATA DAN JANGAN TERLALU BERHARAP LEBIH UNTUK YANG BELUM ADA KALAU MEMANG MILIKMU PASTI AKAN  KETEMU.. KALAU BUKAN JATAHMU…APALAGI SAMPAI MEREBUT MILIK ORANG MEMAKAI CÀRA TIDAK BAIK, ITU AKAN MEMBUAT HIDUPMU MERANA, SENGSARA DAN ANGKARA MURKA SEMUA ITU AKAN SIRNA KEMBALI KE ASALNYA

Yèn umpåmå ayem iku mung biså dituku karo akèhé båndhå dahnå rekasané dadi wong sing ora duwé.
SEUMPAMA KETENTERAMAN ITU BISA DIBELI DENGAN HÀRTA, ALANGKAH SENGSARANYA ORANG YANG TIDAK PUNYÀ

Untungé ayem isà diduwèni såpå waé sing gelem ngleremké atiné ing bab kadonyan, seneng tetulung marang liyan, lan pasrahké uripé marang Gusti kang murbeng dumadi…

UNTUNGNYA, KETENTERAMAN BISA DIMILIKI OLEH SIAPA SAJA YANG TIDAK MENGAGUNGKAN KEDUNIAWIAN, SUKA MENOLONG ORANG LAIN DAN MENYERAHKAN HIDUPNYA KEPADA TUHAN SANG PENCIPTA

Selalu melted setiap baca karya besar beliau….

I Want to Be A Successful Online Writer

FUNNYWOW_5d5294e574d72e13

This statement was actually my 2015 resolution, but somehow I couldn’t make it. This year, I push myself to write at least one post every month. Yes, I have to challenge myself; otherwise, my old resolution will be just in vain.

I kind of like to enlist the so many excuses that I made for not writing regularly last year:

  1. Limited access to my computer and the Internet.

My Mac is the main medium to write, but then I will be able to do it only in my office at work. Now, like it or not, I have to use my laptop or my smart phone; the latter can be my portable hot spot if I just don’t have the necessary access to the Internet.

  1. Self-motivation and self-discipline.

I should keep on telling myself that writing can be done every time and everywhere, because the flexibility of online environment requires my responsibility. Now this year I try to be committed to what I have planned: real commitment and discipline to write regularly, at least 15 minutes every day. That’s it.

3. It’s hard to communicate through writing.

I really made up that excuse I think. Who will limit me to express myself in writing? No one. Now, whatever comes into my mind, I will just grab my smart phone and put it into writing. I will ignore grammar, and I won’t limit the category of my writing. I can write my personal story, a lesson learned, a new experience, new knowledge, whatever. The more I write, the better communication skill I’ll have.

My words of the day:

“I write more because I know there are  more who likes to read”

Family Lunch di Resto Remaja Kuring Serpong

kuring

20 Aqua                                                150,000

20 Es Teh Manis                                 120,000

4 Ikan Kuwe Bakar                             259,000

1 Gulai Kepala Ikan Kakap                 82,000

4 Udang Peci Asam Manis               240,000

6 Bakul Nasi Putih                             126,000

3 Sayur Asam                                         48,000

3 Gado-Gado Pengantin                     72,000

2 Ayam Goreng Utuh                         156,000

Pajak            Restoran                          125,300

Kuncinya sih, yang mahal minumannya (aneka jus sekitar 20rb an), jadi saya belikan mereka minuman standar aja hehehe… Kalau mereka mau nambah sendiri, ditanggung masing2.

So, kalau mau coba maksi bersama keluarga, saya rekomendasikan tempat ini. Jangan lupa bawa tongsis dan baju salin buat yang mau nyebur ke kolam. 🙂
